Ubuntu!

Ubuntu is the ancient African word for "humanity to others." Now I have humanity in my PC!

I just installed a second operating system, Linux Ubuntu, just last night. I thought I only had to do two things: partition and install. But it's a good and safe thing to call a Linux-devoted friend to guide me through the whole process 'coz its sooo complex for me. He made me do these weird things to my computer that I'm sure I'm gonna forget soon. But it was all worth it. I have acquired a "healthy" Ubuntu with the accursed Windows XP still intact. I'm relieved most especially when my old files are still there. Losing them is my biggest fear.

Ok I have to make this quick. Two long quizzes coming up later today. Study, study, study!

Ultra Stampede: Deadly Blend of Greed and Sloth

The widespread news of the stampede was evident that even one of my classes had devoted around 15 minutes of the period to discuss about the tragedy. Everyone is entitled to his own opinion about it. The teacher definitely has his stand on this, but it was remarkably different from everybody else's sympathetic viewpoint.

As the news expressed remorse about the tragedy, our teacher laughed and thought, buti nga sa inyo [good for you]! That was unexpected of someone who teaches Religious Studies. But ironic as it is, he's got a good reason for feeling this way.

Our RS teacher believes that no one should be accountable for the stampede but those very people, driven by greed and idleness, who struggled to get into Ultra. They could've been spared the tragedy if they were not lazy enough to seek instant wealth. Instant - that was the root of it all, according to him. The 21st century is an era of technology that provides immediate results. The modern person just cannot wait for almost anything to finish. That's why there are instant noodles, instant pancit, etc.

The teacher explained that this orientation of having instant results was also carried into how people earn money. The contestants-to-be hope to acquire money or business showcases instantly by just making a fool of themsleves in the show. When the stampede broke out, they didn't care what or who they step on as long as they can get the chance to win. Sir (I'd better use this instead of "our teacher" coz it's so long...) expressed his disapproval to this kind of attitude and declared that these people deserved their pain or, unfortunately for the 71 (according updated news) others, their death.

The only sure-fire way to a stable income is a decent job. And that requires hardwork, Sir said.

His sermon has actually influenced my viewpoint on this issue. However, I somehow disagree that the dead of the stampede deserved their fate. Not all of them may have been just plain lazy to hope for instant wins. Note that most of the dead are elderly lady. Perhaps they thought they are too old for work. And even if they did look for jobs, they might most likely be refused of employment because they are... old and weak. This may have also led to their death. The elderly are more vulnerable to panic-induced situations involving crowds, like stampedes.

Plus, I am sure that while these people were on the ground, being stepped on during that stampede, they were thinking about their lives and families and not anymore about that instant "slice of meat."

Current Events

Since I have no idea on what significant personal info I may post about, perhaps it's time to stop being self-centered and instead blab about the national occurrences, which have caught my attention because they are disturbing.

First stop, Manny Pacquiao! Yes, he has uplifted the Filipino people. And the response to him was overwhelming - cornily overwhelming! For the love of God! From the minute I learned that he has this "Para Sayo" music video up to this very moment, I have been lambasting him in my mind and to my friends. How corny can he and his fanatical supporters get?

Before the fight, it's like he was about to die in the hands, or more like the fists of Eric Morales. *glancing at the TV* My God! Look at that! Jen Bautista, the singer who frenziedly sang the National Anthem before the fight, is on TV right now singing the same. And now... *looking at the TV* ...shit! There's Manny! He's a guest in Magandang Umaga Pilipinas right now. I'm gonna watch the TV first and look for something to lash about him.

*watching TV*

*puking* The background music was actually Manny's "Para Sayo" novelty song! Manny at least looked cleaner, but he's as ugly as ever! He was asked to confirm his rematch with Eric Morales. He said that Morales' team are saying that they agree with a third match. But Manny assumed that they were just announcing this to show that they are not afraid, and that in truth, Morales was now intimidated. He mentioned furthermore that the third match would be a 132-pound category. Manny again presupposed that Morales' team increased the required weight, and said that it would be a "trap" for him, which meant that he would most likely be defeated. What an ego!

And there's more. One host asked if the rumors about him having a child with another woman. Manny replied that if the alleged child was proven to be his, then he would not hesitate to support him/her. What the hell does that mean?! He just implied that there is possibility that he impregnated another woman! God! That may mean he's careless in keeping secrets or he's just plain stupid in answering showbiz questions. Enough about him!

Another event that shocked the whole nation was the stampede outside the Ultra Stadium, where the first anniversary of Wowowee was supposed to be celebrated. 76 were confirmed dead in the tragedy, most of them are elderly women.

The show promised big prizes that obviously drew more people to join the contests in the show. The people have been camping outside the arena for about two days. I saw a woman interviewed on TV that people refused to leave their places because somebody would definitely take their spots. So if someone wanted to pee, he/she should have somebody or something to conceal him/her so that he/she may not be seen while peeing on the ground! Just a while ago, I saw the DILG Undersecretary on TV commented that Wowowee was like "throwing a piece of meat to a pack of wolves." After announcing the findings of the investigations on the stampede, he expressed his own opinion that ABS-CBN treated these people like animals. The network just expressed that they were dismayed and hurt at this.

Personally, the people waiting under the sun's heat were not treated like animals. Actually, they made themselves animals, peeing on the ground, forgetting about basic human hygiene.

On the issue of who's liable, ABS-CBN has been declared responsible for the control of such an event with massive crowds. But there was one person, whom I saw interviewed on TV again, blamed the corrupt government for all of this. He said that if Gloria was able to address the poverty in the country, there might have been no huge number of people struggling to get into Ultra just to get the slim chance of being chosen as contestants, let alone winning the prizes.
